Aly's Tuesday Newsletter: Today's tip of the day, job leads, and newly published stories!
There's a Hemingway quote I keep written on a post-it that is placed near my coffee grinder:
“When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write.”
(There’s actually a bunch of famous quotes I do this with, but we’ll break this one down for now.)
Take this thought any way you want -- it may be to wake up early and start the day strong and fresh. Or it could be to do the most important thing you need to do that day first, while you are most awake and alert (and the coffee is doing its job).
Either way, whenever I want to meander about in the morning and watch some morning TV or fiddle around on social media, I remember that quote, and it gets me centered again. I hope it’s as helpful for you!
Speaking of Hemingway, I have plans tonight to attend the opening of a new speakeasy and I couldn’t be more excited. (How’s that for a segue?) — will be sure to report back tomorrow morning!
Giant Nose is seeking a Public Relations Account Executive ( Austin Job Post & San Antonio Job Post) to join their teams in Austin and San Antonio. The Public Relations Account Executive is heavily focused on writing and pitching media, while also gaining more experience in PR planning and strategy. They will manage their designated public relations Account Coordinator in the performance of their job duties as well as develop press materials, cultivate professional networks, actively pitch and build relationships with media, and create plans and client strategy.
They are also seeking a Public Relations Account Supervisor (Austin Job Post) with 5-6 years of agency experience. The Public Relations Account Supervisor is heavily focused on developing creative and effective client strategy, along with writing press materials and pitching media. They will also lead accounts. 1 - Zero-Prep Products That Make A *Perfect* Healthy Lunch: We have to pick our battles sometimes, right? I'm working on a mix-and-match story stuff you get at the grocery store that you don't have to chop or cook or do anything but open and eat, like this Trader Joe's story I did but stuff you can get at Publix/Kroger/Wegmans or whatever the regional chain you favor. Would love RD input on this!
2 - Best Trader Joe's Items for Easy, Healthy Summer Entertaining - this is very similar to the TJ's story linked above but I'm focusing on summer entertaining - those cheese and charcuterie plates, fun olive or pepper blends, interesting dips, etc. If you are an RD who wants to weigh in (and FINE to weigh in on multiple stories), please reach out!
I'm working on a roundup of tips and product suggestions for stocking your kid's dorm fridge/freezer as they had back to school (or to the dorm for the first time). These fridges/freezers tend to be smaller and not hold as much, so you want to make sure you use their real estate best -- keeping in mind the common appliances you'll find in a dorm kitchen (and those you probably wouldn't). I'm looking for value, so good stuff that you can get at a good price vs. fancy stuff a kid wouldn't need (so, no wagyu or caviar or lobster for this one, think stuff that they could really get a lot of use out of...say...chicken parts or chopped meat you can order online), but also, commentary/ideas for what they will need, and what they will actually use. So, think, foods that will fill them up and keep them healthy and happy and will be easy to pull together to make meals they'll actually enjoy (tall order, I know!)
Many know I began my career as a beauty writer, and I ultimately segued into more of a culinary travel writer. That makes this particular topic feel rather close to my heart: For HerMoney, I’m rounding up must-have beauty/hair/skin products for your travel bag - this is beauty products, hair products, maybe a blowout brush (always travel with one because i hate hotel hair dryers), travel-friendly makeup palettes, a good brush, etc., that are great to keep in your toiletries bag in your suitcase at all times. (And yes, I do maintain a specific travel beauty bag that is distinct from my home one!)
I’m working on a story on best reusable cups freebies and discounts - establishments that give some kind of BYO cup discount. These types of discounts fell by the wayside for COVID, but have since started coming back.
