I can’t think of this holiday without a fun memory of a dear old friend who I worked with at my first job post college, when I was a copy editor at a small publishing house.
This girl, who was super lovely and we ultimately became lifelong friends, was previously unfamiliar with Jewish holidays but loved that I’d bake goodies and bring them in to share whenever the occasion merited. She was especially excited the first time I brought homemade chocolate hamentashen…and when I explained the history behind this treat, she remembered it in the most adorable way.
A year later…”when is the ear cookie holiday?”
(Disclaimer for those not in the know, there’s no ears in my cookies. Hamentashen are triangular filled-pocket cookies, and the name refers to Haman, the villain in the Purim story. In Hebrew, hamantashen are also known as אוזני המן, meaning "Haman's ears".
That’s your Jewish lesson for the day!
Anyway, I normally don’t write this late in the day, but this morning has been a hectic one, that has gotten away from me - but I’m off to enjoy. my final full day in Santa Monica (I head home tomorrow — but I can’t wait to come back!)
