Tuesday: A reminder that answering the question (rather than predicting the question) is essential when submitting commentary to journalists
Seeking RDs and nutritionists to weigh in on pending content!
Good morning!
Today’s discussion topic is a brief but important one that I think impacts a lot of you reading this email.
You’ll see that nearly daily, I’ll share calls for experts to submit commentary for stories. From day to day, the type of expert I need can run the gamut pretty widely, from RDs to chefs or bartenders to sleep experts or dermatologists, all dependent on the outlet, assignment and scope of the assignment.
But do you know what rarely changes? I’ll ask for credible experts to email me to answer questions regarding an assignment topic, and dozens will send commentary before knowing the specifics of what I’m looking for or what the questions may be.
I say this with so much love and respect: Your time, your expert’s time, and, to be honest, my time, is limited and valuable. If you submit commentary that doesn’t address what I need, you’ve just wasted your resources and we’re going to have to start fresh (or, to be honest, chances are I’ll just go to the next person in my inbox that didn’t do that).
It’s in your best interests, and your client’s best interests, to wait to see what we actually need and are asking. That way you can tailor your responses to the questions being asked, rather than sending a whole bunch of commentary that addresses something else entirely.
(Also, I’ll be honest, if I send out a call for commentary and I immediately get six paragraphs back chatting about some abstract semi-related topic stream, I’ll wonder if AI, and not you or your expert, crafted that response. Much like sometimes a hot dog can be too cheap, sometimes a response can be…too fast.)
And, while we’re at it, remember that the goal with responses is that they be succinct and answer the question, but also be quotable. So many people send responses that are bulleted lists with one word or phase per bullet. You can’t quote that!
