Tuesday: A reminder the magnitude of your story will always be determined by the other news of the day.

Good morning!
Over the weekend, I was on the phone with a dear friend and we were discussing a bit of pop culture history: Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson were obviously huge celebrities and have iconic status in their industries, however when Michael Jackson died, it was massive breaking news and Farrah Fawcett ended up like six pages later in all the papers the next day.
The reason for this: They died the same exact day, and Michael Jackson’s death was by far the more shocking death. So, the Farrah news got overshadowed.
Now, the reason my friend and I were discussing this was not nostalgia for the news of 2009, but rather this: How big your news is will ALWAYS be dependent on the magnitude of the other news of the day.
We all know that when there’s major breaking news going on, it’s going to dominate the news cycle, and another story - a different, unrelated story that may also be important but not THAT MAGNITUDE of importance will get less attention or be entirely ignored.
As journalists, we are also going to have to be sort of gate keepers in that sense, prioritizing certain stories over others due to what is timely, the current news cycle, and even the time of year. (That’s why holiday content reigns supreme the same time every year, of course.)
Zero-sum game: Remember, there’s only so much space, bandwidth, and attention span for. And that’s eve true on a pop culture and trending interest level: If we’re all talking about Taylor Swift getting engaged or yearning for Conrad on TSITP, there’s less room that day for chatter about robot vacuums.
The “slow news day” effect: Smaller stories are bigger news when there’s nothing major going on. But that same story would get a lot less eye balls when there’s big stuff going on.
Momentum and continuity: If you’re already in the news it’s easier to stay in the news. If a story is already trending, it is going to continue to get more coverage. That’s why newsjacking is SO popular in pitching — everyone wants to be a barnacle on the winning canoe. Everyone is pitching orange everything because of Taylor, and sourdough is the most popular it has been since 2021 when we were all baking and making whipped coffee and baked feta pasta because TikTok told us that was how to survive pandemics.
From a pitching angle, you can look at it as a sort of feedback loop: If something is trending it’s more likely to continue to be trending until someone or something else is trending. It is its very trending status that makes it continue to trend.
Agenda-setting: We all influence one another. If a topic is given major coverage by a major outlet, it’s likely others will ultimately cover it something like it. It’s kind of the echo chamber of the media world, and we all see it happen every time one major outlet or broadcast declares something “in” or “on trend” and all dominos line up to echo the sentiment, making the trend actualize even if it hadn’t already.
So, how do you compete for attention while pitching media during a crowded news cycle?
Congrats for getting this far!
Impact: Will your story have significant impact? How much? Is that huge impact immediate? If the answer is no, or little, wait for tomorrow to pitch. You can’t compete with major breaking news.
Timeliness: Is your news actually new? Remember that news is DEFINED as “new information.” Anything that is NEW NEWS, as in urgent, timely, developing, timely will take precedence.
Novelty: Hey, not everything has to be life or death. I write about food and commerce and royals. Trending or meaningful doesn’t have to mean big life-changing news. It can also be the unusual or bizarre that grabs a reader’s attention. As my college journalism professor used to remind us, “Man bites dog” is more newsworthy than “Dog bites man.” Why? Because one is the unusual and the unexpected, and the other is not.
Hope that is helpful in your pitching today! Now, on to what I am working on!

Here’s what I’m working on:
Be sure to read the below list carefully. Many are stories I posted about yesterday, but some of yesterday's stories are no longer listed and a few new ones have been added since yesterday. This (below) is everything that is still a currently open opportunity as of today.
Please remember when pitching me: Email me at alywalansky@gmail.com - do NOT just hit reply on this newsletter, or there’s a good shot your email will be lost in the heap. Give your email a subject line that makes it clear which story you are pitching me for — it’ll help you in the long run.
Please consult my industry insights guides on submitting expert commentary, sending emails that will catch a journalist’s attention, how to craft pitches journalists will say ‘yes’ to, and the right and wrong way to submit photos, if you need any extra guidance before sending your pitches.

Sourcing for 2 pieces:
I’d love southern chefs (that are chefs working in the south or from the south) to weigh in on their own favorite Thanksgiving dessert and why - feel free to be nostalgic here and it’s OK to choose something obvious — or send me something left field.
What Thanksgiving dishes are OK to cheat on a bit? I’d love southern chefs to weigh in — what dishes do they ‘cheat’ on or advise we ‘cheat’ on? Are there certain dishes they outsource or take short-cuts on? Advice to us non-chefs on how to do so as well?

You all already know I do a ton of going to restaurants and trying foods and cocktails for various stories for various outlets, but for this specific outlet, I do a lot of “I tried this” type food-delivery type pieces on new menu items, food product releases, and meal prep ideas or family meal type deals. If you have any that you want me to consider, let me know!
Also: I’m beginning to source for a variety of holiday gift guides for this outlet.
While I don’t have specific categories and subtopics completely ironed out yet, I’m currently interested in receiving gift guide pitches in the following categories: Travel-related gifts, gifts for your man, home/kitchen related gifts, tech gear/gadgets, office-related gifts.
To pitch me for these guides, please be sure to include the following:
Name of item
Links to major retailers where sold (it’s in your best interest to include several retailer link options when pitching)
Link to image and any necessary credits
Description why it’s a fit
Item must be currently available and currently in stock (and if you want any guidance on how to pitch for gift guides more successfully, be sure to check out the webinar recording linked above — it’s free!)
Forbes
Before pitching: Please be sure to refer to my photo submission guidelines for help with photo submission best practices!
FYI: Forbes gift guide topics and pitching instructions coming by later this week!
I’m sourcing for Halloween-inspired cocktails. For these, I’m looking for interesting and inventive dishes on menus at restaurants/bars nationwide.
Name of dish/cocktail
Restaurant, city, state, website
Description of dish
Quote from chef about dish/cocktail (plus name and title of person quoted)
Image and photo credit (I prefer links to attachments and remember to follow my instructions on the best way to submit photos and how to label your file names, thanks!)
I’m also working on a story on enjoying lower ABV cocktails in December. I know a ton of people (not me, obviously) are doing Sober October, as a way of having a total body reset before the active holiday event season, but another option is to try to moderate a little in December by focusing on lower ABV versions of your favorite drinks, made with low or mid-ABV spirits. So if you work with low-ABV spirits that have low-proof (vs. zero proof) holiday cocktails on the menu at bars/restaurants, please drop me a line! (Same pitching format as usual.)
Additionally, World Vegan Day is coming up and I’m looking for restaurants/bars around the nation that serve dishes you’d never believe are vegan are are unique and delish. Obviously, not talking about a spinach wrap here. This is stuff that would look like a cheese lovers’ or carnivore’s dream…but just happens to be completely vegan! Same pitching parameters as always, please :)
have a great day <3
