Good morning!
I had a lovely lunch and learn virtual consulting session yesterday afternoon with one of my very favorite agencies, that I’ve been working with in various capacities for years. Our conversation focused on a lot of the topics on all of our minds right now, from holiday gift guides to tariffs and the economy (ughhh oyyyy) to AI (ughhh oyyyy again) to better way to deal with sending mailers and samples to media to the changing and emerging landscape. It was a lovely time and an amazing conversation. Reach out if you ever want me to plan something similar with your team!
I’ll be speaking as part of a panel at a Pitchcraft virtual event later this morning, Oct. 28 that dives into Yahoo! Creators and how this fits into the broader landscape of changing lifestyle media. Note that this event is only open to Pitchcraft members but if you are one or become one before the event, would love to see you there! As you know, I’m very much involved in Yahoo Creators these days and I’m excited to have an opportunity to share more about what makes it so special in this changing landscape.
This time of year, I’m receiving — no lie, no exaggeration — upwards of 1,000 emails each and every day. That happens when you’re working on building a bunch of gift guides in addition to all your regular assignments. And each day, I receive a solid stack of what I’m going to call for the purposes of this email, the ‘pre-pitch.’
“Hey Aly, saw you were working on some gift guides, is it OK to send you some pitches?” or “Hey Aly, I saw you are seeking southern chefs to send you their favorite Thanksgiving dessert and why, is it OK to send you some answers?” or “Hey Aly, I saw you are rounding up great Halloween cocktails, is it OK to send you some cocktails from my bar client?”
There’s nothing wrong with these emails or the sentiment behind them..but they are also not necessary. If I send a call for pitches, consider that an invitation to send your pitch. Asking for permission before then sending what I already asked you to send just creates more email for you to send and me to receive and also slows down our timeline because, if a few days passes and then I’m sorting through all my responses to a specific query, I will not have your response because you’re still waiting on ceremony to send it. In which case, you and your client may miss out, and it wasn’t necessary to do so. Just go ahead and send! It’s fine! Blanket permission right here.
(That said, if I say in a call for pitches that I have specific questions for a source, then obviously email me and ask for those questions before sending a response! Since you don’t know what you’re responding to. However, the great majority of my calls for sources I give a very intricate bullet list of the exact information I need from you in your pitch — so go ahead and just give me that information! No need to knock on the door. Just walk right in.)
Please keep all this in mind when pitching.

Holiday Gift Guide 2025: The Best Celebrity Spirits To Gift This Holiday: I know, it seems like every celebrity has their own wine or tequila these days but if you’ve tried a few, you know they are very much not created equal. Some are great tho, and it’s usually an example of the celebrity owner putting a lot of work into it, and not just slapping their name on the label. I’m rounding up these as gift ideas. Follow my usual gift guide pitching guidelines, please!
I’m also working on a story on enjoying lower ABV cocktails in December. I know a ton of people (not me, obviously) are doing Sober October, as a way of having a total body reset before the active holiday event season, but another option is to try to moderate a little in December by focusing on lower ABV versions of your favorite drinks, made with low or mid-ABV spirits. So if you work with low-ABV spirits that have low-proof (vs. zero proof) holiday cocktails on the menu at bars/restaurants, please drop me a line! (Same pitching format as usual.)
I’m also looking for Thanksgiving-inspired dishes and drinks available at bars and restaurants. So, not a straight-up plate of turkey and stuffing, but traditional Thanksgiving dishes and sides reimagined in a new way. Same pitching format as always, please!
Finally, I’m seeking fun variations on PIZZA. If you have a really fun pizza, please let me know. Same pitching parameters as always! (FYI: I know that October is National Pizza Month but this story will actually publish in early November and be a bit more evergreen.)
