There's a lot new today!
I wanted to start off today’s newsletter by sending out a heartfelt thanks to all of you. I got hundreds of emails, texts, and DMs yesterday and this past weekend congratulating one on being named the #1 food journalist of 2022 by Muck Rack. Journalism can be a lonely and isolating career at times.
Many years ago, when I was decided to pursue a journalism degree, I did not do it for hopes of recognition or accolades. I just did it because I saw so many amazing stories out there to tell and I wanted to be able to share them with the world. But it means so so much to me to have all this friendship and support. It’s truly humbling.
Yesterday was one of those long, but special days. As emotionally draining as it was to watch the Queen's funeral, the procession, and the ceremony at Windsor, I'm so grateful I was able to witness this historical and meaningful yet surreal and endlessly sad time.
But after that emotionally charged day, I was really happy to be able to spend some quiet and restorative time with friends. One of my long-time industry friends Sydney brought her incredibly cool Australian wine client into Brooklyn to meet me for dinner and we went to a really fun biodynamic wine bar right in my neighborhood. His wine has a really incredible story and mission behind it, and you'll hear more in a story soon! But also: It's just so wonderful when people are generous enough with their time to come to me in Brooklyn. We have some awesome spots here, and it's so nice to end a night and know I'm 10 minutes from home!
During the pandemic, I tried to create a sense of normalcy for my extended friends group by hosting a virtual Friendsgiving for 20 or so friends on Zoom. We did it pretty non traditionally (I arranged to have personal pizzas sent to everyone's homes to support local businesses in their neighborhoods, since it wasn't like I could cook turkey for everyone from afar). It was a really great time and one of the few bright spots of those dark times when none of us wanted anything more than to be together again.
I bring that up because one of my assignments this week is planning a Friendsgiving on a budget. Of course, we’re in a different phase now, and we can be together again. For this story, I do not necessarily mean virtual, but that could be included for those who will be doing that (hey, most of us still have friends from near and far!) and could be in-person (I'm interested in both, actually), and I'd love experts to weigh in. Bookmark it and make your life a bit easier.
This list will live on my Substack URL and be updated as necessary. That way, you can see what I’m doing at any publication, at any time, from types of stories to general structure of stories to even volume and frequency of my content at that outlet.
This can also help you to target pitching a bit better. That makes your job easier, and mine too!

I've been popping into a lot of PR team virtual meetings and some other fun stuff (This summer, I even joined in on an agency’s team retreat right here in Brooklyn — it was so fun and I made so many new friends!) and making myself available to answer all sorts of questions about pitching, events, and trips from a media perspective. I like to keep these things chill and comfortable and relaxed all by sharing perspective and learning from one another.

If you are a freelance publicist and want to join in with a few other freelance publicist friends and set something up, we can do that as well!
Potential new availability: A few people have reached out to me and asked if I was also open to doing consulting for freelance journalists in addition to the PR consulting sessions I currently do, and I am absolutely considering it. I need to spend some time thinking on what a session like that may look like and be structured, but after 20+ years in the industry, I’ve seen a whole lot change and it may be interesting to share my own experiences with someone just starting out. So, stay tuned!
