Good morning!
For those who happen to be on their email today, a reminder that diversity isn’t a one-day initiative. It’s a daily editorial decision.
It’s important for all of us to remember this, and for journalists, editors, brands, and publicists to make this a priority as they make hundreds of small decisions every week: Which experts get quoted? Which founders get pitched? Which restaurants get recommended? Which destinations get covered? Which creators get invited to events? Which voices get called upon again and again?
None of those decisions feels particularly significant in isolation, or individually, but collectively, they determine whose stories get heard.
We all know many publicists and brands have a “go-to” spokesperson list and many journalists have a “go-to” expert list. But if every story quotes the same people over and over, we’re missing incredible perspectives.
Here’s some goal posts to add to our agenda today and going forward:
Build a more diverse expert database.
Follow creators outside your usual circles.
Read publications serving audiences or viewpoints different from your own community and experiences.
Today is Juneteenth, and while I’m not pretending a newsletter is going to solve the million things that need to be fixed in this country before lunch, it is a good opportunity to ask a simple question: Who’s missing from the room? Or, in our case: Who’s missing from the pitch list? The source list? The event invitation? The panel lineup? The expert roster? The gift guide? The media trip?
Diversity isn’t just about what is right or fair. It’s about finding better stories. The most interesting restaurants, entrepreneurs, creators, founders, chefs, bartenders, hoteliers, and experts are often the people who haven’t been quoted 47 times already this month. Sometimes the next great story isn’t hiding. It’s simply waiting for someone to widen the search.
Now for today’s admin note: I just wanted to share a few updates for Newsweek’s Readers’ Choice Awards. For those of us who can’t live without coffee, all the coffee award category nominations (best cold brew, best subscription service, best coffee maker, best brand, best coffee chain, etc) launched yesterday. Please check if you or your client made it in, and please vote! A reminder that voting is still active for airport travel/lounge categories, too.
