Tuesday: Some of my tips to make the most of in-flight wifi + newly pending stories

Hello from inflight wifi!

JFK was TOTALLY fakakta this morning — is everyone on spring break??? What even IS spring break if you are middle-aged and traveling with your laptop and a sea of chargers and cables?

This and other deep thought questions are with me today as I attempt to utilize aforementioned inflight wifi to get on top of things before I hit the ground running (I have a busy schedule this week, y’all) once I land in LA this afternoon.

I use inflight wifi every single time I travel — if it’s available on my flight, of course. (That’s why I am so grateful that my preferred airline of choice, Delta, offers free wifi on most routes these days!). But I’ll be the first to admit, wifi is sometimes pretty slow. However, there’s some things you can do on your very own to make it a more seamless (and productive) experience:

1. Need to download anything? Do it while you are still at the gate. Download those big files before you are at the mercy of inflight internet. Better yet, do it before you leave home. Did I mention I set my alarm for 4:45 am for an 8:30 am flight today? I have problems.

2. Disable all automatic updates and backups.

3. Disable all background apps that access the wifi (same goes for browser extensions!)

4. Don’t open a million tabs. It becomes like the tower of babel for your connection. (OMG, remember that episode of Buffy where she can hear everyone’s thoughts at once and she goes insane? That’s your wifi.)

5. Clear your cache. I do this with my Avast protection software weekly anyway, but it’s great to do before a flight because it might actually help avoid having problems accessing that plane or hotel wifi in the first place.

6. Reminder: You can access mobile versions of websites even if you are on a laptop, these always require less data (and thus are easier to load) than the desktop equivalent.

7. After you’ve cleared your cache you may want to load those tabs you plan to use inflight, that way the inflight wifi won’t have to load them when you are in the air!

8. I’m a Google Docs girl and reminder, if need be, you can always work on those files offline and just sync when you land. Preload those pages and set them to offline mode to give yourself that option just in case!
